Dr. Alice von Hildebrand endorses "Feeding the Lord's Flock - A Contemporary Understanding of Pascendi and the Errors of Modernism" - By Roger LeBlanc
Credentials of Dr. von Hildebrand:
Born Alice Jourdain, Brussels, Belgium, Dr. von Hildebrand is a world renowned Catholic philosopher and theologian and a former professor. She came to the U.S. in 1940 and began teaching at Hunter College in New York City in 1947. She was married to the famous philosopher and theologian Dietrich von Hildebrand (1889-1977), meeting him at Fordham University in New York where she was a student and he was a professor. She remained married to him until his death. She retired in 1984. Alice von Hildebrand lives in the United States and is a lecturer and an author, whose works include: The Privilege of Being a Woman (2002) and The Soul of a Lion: The Life of Dietrich von Hildebrand (2000), a biography of her late husband. She also hosted a Series on Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) often running a Series with Fr. Benedict Groeschel and others.
Some of the great churchmen of the twentieth century have held Dietrich von Hildebrand in high regard. Pope Pius XII called Dietrich von Hildebrand a "twentieth century Doctor of the Church," but equally impressive are the words of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who wrote of von Hildebrand: "I am personally convinced that, when, at some time in the future, the intellectual history of the Catholic Church in the twentieth century is written, the name of Dietrich von Hildebrand will be most prominent among the figures of our time."
The following is Dr. Alice von Hildebrand's endorsement:
Feeding the Lord's Flock - A Contemporary Understanding of Pascendi and the Errors of Modernism
by Roger LeBlanc
"Homer is new and fresh this morning, while there is nothing perhaps, as old and tired as today's newspaper". (Charles Peguy). I wish to apply these words to Pius X's magnificent Encyclical Pascendi Dominici Gregis. Written l02 years ago, it is not only "new and fresh", but gives us a message whose importance and urgency increased since it was written. We are very indebted to Mr. LeBlanc for having made it accesible to a large public. Papal Encyclicals are not always easy reading. While totally faithful to its message, he made it a must reading for every Catholic who realizes how his faith is threatened by the cancer of modernism. "Tolle, lege (Take it and read)" (St. Augustine's Confessions, VIII )
- Alice von Hildebrand
About the book:
On September 8, 1907, Pope St. Pius X issued the Encyclical "Pascendi Dominici Gregis" (Feeding the Lord's Flock) in which he condemned Modernism in all of its forms. He called it, "the synthesis of all heresies".
He wrote this Encyclical to protect the Catholic Church from the insidious influences and attacks that came from Atheism, Agnosticism, Protestantism, Humanism, Secularism, Existentialism, and all the "isms" that would undermine Divine Revelation. It was also a response to the work of the Masonic movement.
The Holy Father brought to bear the full power of the Papacy against anyone who would advocate or embrace Modernism. And he made it crystal clear the only way to deal with Modernists was to have them rooted out of the Church. They were to be suppressed in every way possible and at every level because he knew they corrupted anything they touched.
This brings us to the question, "What is Modernism?"
It refers to the notion that a "fully modern man" has been forever changed by science so that he will now accept "only" what he can observe by way of experiment through the scientific method (Empirical evidence). He must not put faith in anything outside of measurable phenomena, and this means the Modern man must no longer look at life and religion like "the Men of Old".
As a result of this attitude, the modern man has lost his vision on many levels, and fails to see what scholastic philosophy reveals about the errors found in his thinking. This is why Modernists shun scholastic philosophers and seek out philosophers who believe all the doctrines and dogmas of the Church are to be "harmonized" with science, and in turn, they use the scientific method to judge history itself. They make science the absolute standard as they go about telling us all the historical claims of the miraculous and the divine cannot be proven by the scientific method. They conclude, therefore, all that is associated with the miraculous and the divine must be removed from Scripture.
Pascendi Dominici Gregis did in fact hinder the progress of the Modernists for a time, but they pressed forward and ravaged educational systems with the poison of Modernism. As a result, Catholics in our day are not as well equipped to receive and understand the importance of "Pascendi" as those in former days.
This brings us to "Feeding the Lord's Flock by Roger LeBlanc". It is to be seen as a "servant" of "Pascendi Dominici Gregis". Using a style of language more readily understood by Catholics in our day, it was written to help Catholics understand the great dangers which Pope St. Pius X warned us about. But it still requires that you put on a thinking cap. It follows paragraph by paragraph the identical layout of "Pascendi Dominici Gregis", and it remains completely faithful to the theological and philosophical conclusions and mandates given to us by Pope St. Pius X.

Dear Msgr. Franco,
ReplyDeleteYou have a wonderful blog - very deep and insightful. Modernism is a poison. Sometimes it is difficult for Catholics to withstand this "modernism assault" in the workplace. We just have to keep on praying - and maybe we can change some hearts - maybe even become a catalyst for our neighbors conversion.
God bless you!
Hi Brian,
ReplyDeleteAgreed. It's a terrific blog. I believe Msgr. Franco has endorsed the books on this blog. If I'm not mistaken, the author of these books is Roger LeBlanc.
I'll be getting a few of them to start, the rest to follow. My interest goes first to "Pascendi" because it deals with modernism, then the Mass (anything that promotes the real presence interests me), and the Trinity. I'll get the rest afterwards.
If you purchase any of these books, or just blog on the subjects, I'll be looking for your comments.
Hello Mark,

"fully modern man" has been forever changed by science so that he will now accept "only" what he can observe by way of experiment through the scientific method (Empirical evidence). He must not put faith in anything outside of measurable phenomena...
ReplyDeleteWhy is modernism poison? Why is it a problem to trust in empiricism? Modernity is trusting in what is observable and what is reasonable. Why don't you believe in fairies, or goblins? Or Zeus or Thor for that matter. Because there is no proof. Faith is not enough... for anyone. Ask yourself why you care about the Shroud of Turin? Why do you need proof if you don't have faith. Right... because faith is not enough. Everyone wants proof. If there were suddenly incontrovertible proof of God/Jesus/Holy Spirit/Etc. out there, Christians would be the first to trumpet it for all to hear.
The scientific method has gotten us mighty far, further than iron age religions. The scientific method has gotten us from really, really believing that people rose from the dead, that people lived 700 (or whatever) years, that dudes walked on water, that the world is on the back of a turtle, that virgins gave birth, that a woman could be born out of her father's head, the scientific method has taken us from really believing all that was really real to being rational skeptics who ask for real proof. I for one see that as progress. Lets stop shuddering at the bogeyman of "modernism" and embrace the truths and wonders it has to offer.
Hi Wahrlict,
ReplyDeleteThanks for taking the time to write.
I think it's important to distinguish between empirical evidence and the need for "self-evidence" which precedes empiricism. When you put method before self-evidence you lose what you are looking for.
Might I suggest you read something I wrote to Chris Cuomo on this subject? You'll find it at:

You might also want to look at this link. It's another comment I wrote to him.

It seems to me you are "discounting the fact" of God with your understanding of empiricism, but I must inform you that your claim is baseless if that is indeed what you mean by "modernism". Modernism that discounts facts is indeed poison because it corrupts man in his own heart and in his reasoning.
Did you know that the greatest scientists of all time, those who have contributed to advances in science and medicine have in fact been Catholics? Did you know the man who came up with the Big Bang theory is a Catholic Priest?
No my friend. Science is never at odds with Faith because they are both reasonable. It is your understanding of science and modernism that is tainted and unreasonable which seems to account for a certain tone of anger in your writing.
Do not worry, we who have faith do not fear what you think is a "boogey-man" as those science could debunk the fact of God or things He has revealed. You are not looking down at the faithful, you are looking up. The one who has faith sees the beauty of science far better than you do because we see it in its proper context.
I do hope you find peace, and perhaps one day you will be open to seeing the beauty of Catholicism.
God Bless
It appears that Vatican II moved significantly away from the approach which was taken by the Modernist encyclicals. So I am rather perplexed that in the 21st century, there remain Catholics who continue to look upon these documents with high regard. Thankfully, only a tiny slice of those in the Church trod down this path, from the present Pope on down.
ReplyDeleteHi Perry,
ReplyDeleteI am not clear on your position. Are you saying Vatican II moved away from Previous documents? It sounds as though you may be trying to say that you are surprised that there are Catholics in the 21st century who adhere to documents such as 'Feeding the Lord's Flock'.
Spot on with this write-up, I actually think this web site needs a great deal more attention.
ReplyDeleteI'll probably be returning to read through more, thanks for the information!
